Why Treading Water Matters

The Skill Most Swimmers Were Never Properly Taught.

Treading water keeps you afloat in deep water without forward movement. It is the difference between a swimmer who can manage any situation in the water and one who can only swim where they can touch the bottom. Surprisingly few recreational swimmers have been taught it properly — and even fewer understand efficient technique.

Brian teaches treading water as a dedicated skill — buoyancy, eggbeater kick, flutter kick, arm sculling — and how to combine them into something you can sustain for minutes without exhausting yourself. Sessions are 90 minutes, fully 1-to-1, in a heated private pool with no public access.

  • Adults who swim but cannot tread water confidently
  • Children learning essential water safety skills
  • Swimmers who exhaust themselves within seconds
  • Eggbeater kick, flutter kick and sculling all covered
  • Technique taught correctly from the start
  • Endurance built so the skill works under pressure

Who These Lessons Are For

Treading Water is for Every Swimmer

Recreational swimmers

Many adults can swim lengths but panic in deep water where they can't touch the bottom. Treading water technique resolves this completely.

Children's water safety

Learning to tread water gives children and their parents real confidence in and around water. It's a fundamental skill that should be taught early.

Open water swimmers

Resting in open water, dealing with currents or waiting for support all require effective treading water. It is a core open water skill.

Triathletes

Pre-race, at buoys or in a start pack — being able to tread water efficiently and calmly is a practical race skill.

Non-swimmers

Brian teaches treading water to complete beginners as part of wider water safety skills. You do not need to be able to swim to book.

Technique improvers

If you already tread water but find it exhausting, the technique needs work. Brian identifies and fixes inefficiencies quickly.

Common Questions Answered

What People Ask Before Booking

You might be thinking…
“I can swim but I can't tread water”
That is extremely common. Most recreational swimmers were taught front crawl and breaststroke but never dedicated treading water technique. One or two focused sessions fixes this for the majority of adults.
You might be thinking…
“I'm worried about the deep end”
Brian introduces depth progressively and only when you are ready. Technique is built in the shallow end first. You will never be put in a situation that feels unsafe.
You might be thinking…
“Is this only for people who can't swim?”
Not at all. Brian teaches treading water to swimmers at every level — from complete beginners learning their first water safety skills to confident swimmers wanting efficient, sustainable technique.
